“Valley Guardian” is rare in that Martin Grelle does not often utilize a square format. This painting is exquisite in its simplicity – a solitary figure in a solitary setting. And yet there is so much more to the story. It is a cold, crisp day. Winter sunlight plays on the rider and his horse bringing out magnificent color. The responsibility is great as he guards his valley, but he is up to the task especially on a beautiful winter day.

Martin Grelle lives with his family just a few miles from where he was born in Texas. Rich in beauty and history, the area has become a mecca for artists. It is one reason why this artist spent his whole life there. Grelle’s work reaches far beyond his Texas home conveying the spirit, drama, beauty and vastness of the American West. He enjoys the Cowboy Artists of America’s trail ride each year, and manages to spend some time occasionally working cattle with local friends. He is proud of the Native American part of his ancestry and studies diligently to portray their culture accurately and sensitively.
