C. 1792 Bertuch Grouse

This wonderful Bertuch copper plate engraving published in 1792, is in fantastic condition for it’s age. The drawings are all hand colored, vibrant, clear and in amazing detail. This leaf pictures different species of Grouse. In 1790 Friedrich Justin Bertuch began printing the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, an encyclopedia for children. It was very important to him to make sure the drawings were true to life, and beautifully painted. This leaf is made of good quality lined paper and measures approximately 7 ½ inches wide by 9 inches tall. It has small holes and on the left side from being bound by string in a book and pencil written names under the pictures as can be seen in the scan.
