Description: Founded in Jan. 1842, by Charles J. Peterson, this women’s magazine included serial installments, short stories, poems, patterns, publisher’s notes, and book reviews. Also included in the magazine were engravings and lithographs with each month’s copy having a fashion plate hand colored by individual artists. As the artists, their supplies and their interpertation changed the hues and shading for each fashion plate making each a distinct individual print. Several ladies could discuss the fashion plates with their magazines having the same image but in similar or totally different color. No two were exactly colored the same.
